Summer Oncology Nursing Fellowship Prepares Students for Success

One nursing student from Sacred Heart University and two from Fairfield University have begun their training in the Susan D. Flynn Summer Oncology Nursing Fellowship Program. Now in its second year, the program was created by Frederick C. Flynn, Jr. in memory of his late wife, Susan, to enable students entering their senior year of a baccalaureate nursing program to acquire knowledge, skills and professional experience under the preceptorship of registered nurses at recognized cancer centers. The goal of the program is to foster the career interests and professional development of aspiring oncology nurses.

To be eligible for this Fellowship, a candidate must have successfully completed the fall junior year semester of a BSN program at a qualifying school, have a minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA and be in “good standing” status at their school.

In 2015, the Susan D. Flynn Summer Oncology Nursing Fellowship Program was expanded by Mr. Flynn to include a total of nine leading cancer care hospitals and nine of the country’s top undergraduate nursing schools. The Bennett Cancer Center was among the first host sites, which now include the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Greenwich Hospital, Abramson Cancer Center at Penn Medicine, Johns Hopkins, Massachusetts General Hospital, NewYork-Presbyterian, Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, Winship Cancer Institute at Emory and St. Vincent’s Medical Center.
