A Unique And Mutually Beneficial Relationship Between Schools, Hospitals, And Students
Overview
- Nursing schools provide the “raw material” (i.e. aspiring nurses) needed for our Fellowship program
- We work closely with several of the country’s leading undergraduate nursing schools to provide their students with a valuable career pathway–via our unique Fellowship program–to the important field of oncology nursing. In doing so, we are jointly addressing a serious workforce gap in both customized training in this specialized field and in the available supply of prospective Oncology Nurses
- Since its inception in 2014 students from over 40 undergraduate nursing schools have participated in our Fellowship program and of our 250 Flynn Fellows in the workforce so far, over 150 are already working as Oncology Nurses. Adding additional schools will enable us to broaden and deepen our applicant pool and also support our planned program expansion
- Participating nursing schools are expected to visibly and actively promote this unique Internship within their respective schools, ideally designate a faculty member as the primary contact (program manager), recognize their selected students, and collaborate with us on internal and external publicity about this program
- Our Flynn Fellows are responsible to serves as “Student Ambassadors” at their respective nursing schools to raise awareness and promote this unique Fellowship program to the junior class
- In addition to the “experiential learning” value of this fellowship, their participation as Flynn Fellows often facilitates Capstone placements for these students at their host hospitals (and thus benefits the participating nursing schools)
- Increasingly our host hospitals are expanding the number of “eligible” nursing schools who can apply to their respective programs
- Since 2014 through this summer, we have had over 3,200 applicants for the 300 available Flynn Fellowship opportunities attesting to the interest level and market “demand” for this program–due to the competitiveness of the selection process interested students are encouraged to apply to as many hospitals as they wish

“This fellowship solidified my desire to be an oncology nurse. The opportunities I had to learn about what it takes to care for the oncology population were truly life changing. I am now much more confident in my abilities to provide excellent and comprehensive care during my future career.”
